What we’re about
We're a group focused on all things Bitcoin. All experience levels welcome, whether you're new and curious or have been in the scene for years. We meet regularly for casual discussions and presentations on topics like the bitcoin protocol and software, economics, trading, storage techniques, investing, and mining. Come out to meet, learn from, and share ideas with fellow Bitcoiners!
Join us on Twitter and in our Telegram group (i.e., send an organizer a DM).
*Note that we are not a "blockchain" or "cryptocurrency" group. There are plenty of those around OC. We're Bitcoiners here to talk Bitcoin.*
Join us and celebrate Bitcoin Pizza Day 2024! The OC Bitcoin Network was founded in 2019 on Bitcoin Pizza Day at a local pizza joint with less than ten people. Today, we host local meetups all around Orange County.
Buy tickets here (21K sats = 2 slices, a beer, & coins for billiards).
As you may know, Bitcoin Pizza Day is coming up. If you are unfamiliar, allow us to briefly explain:
Bitcoin, released in 2009, is software designed as “a purely peer-to-peer version of electronic cash that allows online payments to be sent directly from one party to another without going through a financial institution” (Nakamoto, 2009).
On May 22, 2010 Laszlo Hanyecz traded 10,000 bitcoin for two Papa Johns pizzas, at the time valued at $41. Hanyecz received “two large pizzas (cheese and ‘supreme’) from Papa John’s — a transaction that would become the first physical purchase made with bitcoin in history, marked by the annual Bitcoin Pizza Day on May 22” (New York Post, 2021).
This purchase gave bitcoin real-world value, pricing one bitcoin at $0.0041 USD. Today, one bitcoin is $59,047 USD and continues to prove itself as a peer-2-peer and censorship resistant electronic cash.
